Qld: Archbishop calls for Good Friday footy ban

The NRL says it respects the concerns of the church over sports matches on Christian holidays.

But NRL media manager PAUL RITCHIE says while the NRL respects the concerns of Brisbane's
Anglican Archbishop PETER HOLLINGWORTH, Good Friday matches will go ahead.

Archbishop HOLLINGWORTH and the Council of Priests have criticised the National Rugby
League for scheduling a major match on Good Friday.

Archbishop HOLLINGWORTH says Good Friday is one of the most significant days in the
Christian calendar and to schedule football on it is deeply offensive.

And a spokesman for Brisbane's Catholic Council of Priests Father FRANK O'DEA says
viewers should boycott broadcasts of the match.

The Brisbane Broncos will play Sydney City Roosters in Sydney on April 13.
