FACING REALITY IN IRAQ.(MAIN)(Editorial)

In his most significant change of policy since launching the war against Iraq, President Bush has wisely decided to seek a greater role for the United Nations as both a peacekeeper and a nation builder. The question now is whether Mr. Bush's action amounts to too little, too late.

Until recently, the Bush administration had insisted that the U.S. could go it alone in rebuilding Iraq and overseeing its transition from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein to a model of democracy for the Mideast. But it has become increasingly clear that despite the swift U.S. military victory in Iraq, the post-war challenges are daunting, dangerous and long-term.
